Historical Milestone

Capt. Tejdeep Singh Rattan wore a full beard and black turban, the first Sikh in a generation allowed to complete U.S. Army basic officer training without sacrificing the articles of his faith. He completed the nine-week training on Monday after Army officials made an exemption to a policy that has effectively prevented Sikhs from enlisting since 1984. SEWA is proud of Tejdeep Singh and congratulates him. It is encouraging to see that efforts for recognition of Sikhs in the US, is bearing fruit. We pray to see more of these examples. Message from Chairperson

Waheguru jee ka khalsa Waheguru jee kee fateh

It gives me great pleasure to roll out the first issue of SEWA Khabraan. This has been a culmination of teamwork by the SEWA board members and committees. We hope this monthly newsletter keeps you informed and involved in SEWA’s activities, and hope you appreciate this additional communication medium. Please give us your encouragement and feedback for improvement, so that we may continue to serve your interests better. This is our TENTH year of SEWA Gurdwara Sahib. Since our first deewan in April 2001, we have provided an open platform for our community to come together & grow spiritually at the lotus feet of the Guru.

In the past few months, terrible natural disasters have affected various parts of the world like Haiti and Chile. In this time of need for so many, it is our moral obligation to do all we can, to help. I am happy to say that SEWA raised $2500 for the Haiti relief fund, from generous contributions made by the sangat. Many of you have also participated in distributing food and warm hoodies to the hungry and homeless. Thank you for your kindness.

One of our major initiatives in 2010 is to complete construction of a new kitchen building by the end of this summer. You will be hearing more about it soon. Meantime, please continue to contribute generously, so that the kitchen can be totally paid for, without having to take out any additional bank loans.

The 2010 working committees have been formed, and you will be reading more about them and their plans, in this and upcoming newsletters.

Let's all count our blessings, be thankful to Waheguru-ji, and keep giving in service of humanity.

Guru Fateh,

Jasbir Kaur Guliani
